The Avondale Mine Diaster

On the day of September 6, 1869 the worst disaster in the history of anthracite mining happened. The incident was named The Avondale Mine Disaster 110 Breaker Boys and Miners died at the Avondale Colliery, located in Luzerne County Pennsylvania in the town of Plymouth. On that tragic day a fire broke out inside the breaker. The fire raged due to the deep mine's air ventilation system which was linked directly to the breaker building. This allowed the fire to spread directly into the mine entrance. The remaining breathable air was robbed quickly from the workers and fueled the fire to the mine. The workers trapped suffered horrific injuries before meeting their doom. Most of the workers died from suffocation before they were consumed by the fire. As a result of this disaster, the General Assembly of Pennsylvania enacted legislation, in 1870, forbidding the construction of breakers directly above or near mine entrances.
