Standing guard over the town of Jim Thorpe (formerly known as Mauch Chunk), the historic Old Jail Museum is a  beautiful two-story stone structure.  Completed in 1871 it was used as the Carbon County Prison from 1871 until January 1995 when it was purchased by Tom McBride and his wife, Betty Lou, of Jim Thorpe. The building has 27 cells, plus basement dungeon cells used as solitary confinement until 1980.

The building is best known as the site of the hanging of seven Irish coal miners known

as Molly Maguires in the 1800s.  On June 21, 1877, today known as the Day of the

Rope, Alexander Campbell, Edward Kelly, Michael Doyle and John Donohue were

hanged at the same time on gallows erected inside the Old Jail Museum cell block.  On

March 28, 1878, Thomas P. Fisher was hanged here, and on January 14, 1879,

James McDonnell and Charles Sharp were hanged on the same gallows.

Historians today feel the Molly Maguire trials were a surrender of state sovereignty.  A

private corporation (a coal/railroad company) initiated an investigation through a

private detective agency (Pinkerton Detectives), a private police force (the Coal & Iron Police) arrested the alleged offenders, and private attorneys (employees of the coal

companies) prosecuted these men.  The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania provided only the courtroom and the gallows.

Before their hanging, the men proclaimed their innocence and today historians believe

many of the condemned men were falsely accused of murder.  Before his hanging one

of the man, thought to be Alexander Campbell, put his hand on the dirty floor of his cell and then placed it firmly on the wall proclaiming, " This handprint will remain as proof of my innocence."  That handprint is visible today for everyone to view even though past wardens tried to eradicate it by washing it, painting it, and even taking downpart of the wall and replastering it.

On 06/09/12 at approximately: 16:00 hrs, Deadline Paranormal entered the historic town of Jim Thorpe. Upon arrival, we decided to walk around the town and check out some of the store fronts on Broadway St. Each store or shop claimed its own unique story of unexplained or paranormal activity. Just the mere sight of our investigation team brought about a story from various shop keepers and town natives. In front of a little shop called Mulligan's Unique Toys & Gifts, was a plywood sign on the sidewalk that read, Walk This Way Ghost Tours "Experience Haunted Jim Thorpe," 8:45 PM. Deadline Paranormal then entered the humble shop and inquired about the Ghost Tours. She then explained some of the history and unexplained or Paranormal happenings that occur within the town. She went on to tell us that the building we were in used to be a funeral home and informed us of some of the experiences she had been told and some that she herself had witnessed. After exiting the shop, we made our way up Broadway St. to our Paranormal destination, The Mauch Chunk Prison. Upon arrival we were met by James, a former employee of the Mauch Chunk Prison of 25 years.

James wasted no time and showed us around the outside of the prison where he led us to the old exercise yard area. Deadline Paranormal then interviewed James about some of his past experiences that had occurred within the prison walls. After our interview, we were met by owner Tom Mcbride and were escorted into the prison where Deadline Paranormal began to set up for our investigation. We began setting up our night vision DVR system and then prepped the rest of our equipment we intended to use for the evening. Camera #1 was set at the cell block entrance facing into the block. Camera #2 was set at the rear of the cell block facing to the front of the cell block toward camera #1. Camera #3 was set up at the entrance to the top tier of the cell block facing the rear of the block and Camera #4 was set up at the rear of the top tier facing the front of the top tier entrance toward camera #3. This allowed us to capture all areas of interest on the first two floors of the cell block. We then swept the block area with our Mel Meter and K-II Meter for any electromagnetic interferences. Some E.M.F fields were located on the top tier of the block near the Gallows.

We then proceeded to The Dungeon where we started our 1st session using The Spirit Box. We started by asking if anyone was down here with us. The response we heard sounded like Ben. We asked James if he remembered any inmates named "Ben." James then told us that the only Ben he knew used to work there with him and that he had passed on in the mid 1990's. Our investigation continued without any further responses from Ben. We then decided to enter the last cell on the right of the The Dungeon where upon entry Tony stumbled over an old foot locker. Tony decided to ask whose locker he had just tripped over and the response we heard was Oops! A few minutes later Tony asked who wants another 60 days lock up. We then heard a response that sounded like "come on pussy!"

After our tour in The Dungeon we made our way back to the cell block area at which time Tony and Chris decided to do a REM Pod and E.V.P session in a cell of interest while Jim took documented the area using still photography. Once inside the cell Tony placed the REM Pod down, within a few seconds it was activated. We did not get any intelligent responses to our questions at this time.

Tony and Christian then decided to try the library in order to try and capture an intelligent response. Again within a few seconds of placing the REM Pod down it was activated. At this time Tony thought this might be happening due to electromagnetic interference. At this time he re placed the REM Pod in another location in the library. Again within a few seconds of placing it down, it activated again. Tony then moved it a 3rd time and nothing happened. After this location we met back up with Jim and decided to enter another cell where James informed us of an inmate who hung himself during his time at the jail. Upon entry the REM Pod was placed on the cell's sink. As we turned our back and started to walk away from the REM Pod it began to blip. No other activity was captured. Upon review of our digital recorder, E.V.P'S were captured and will be uploaded to the site at a later date.
